Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft. T.I., Pharrell

Music videos serve many purposes it can be to get a message to a particular audience or 
to be self-promotion purposes there is many reasons for music videos. However music videos are not always used in a good way and there are many music videos, which you could say that are very controversial.

An example of this would be blurred lines By Robin Thick FT T.I & Pharrell this song is claimed to be the most controversial song of our decade. The reason behind this is the way women are portrayed and the message it is sending to its viewers it is seen as sexist and discrimination towards women with the language that is used and visual image that symbolizes women as being very low.
Men sexual innuendo and Female anatomy.  

The opening of the music video was a mid-shot of Robing Thicke and a model on a mattress the model is not wearing cloths and this instantly grabs the audience attention. We then get a close up that zooms into an extreme close up of the model face. This is done to portray what the model looks like and how pretty she is it’s also used to create sexual tension with the audience as she is biting her lips. The model is also wearing red lipstick, which symbolizes love and seduction.
24 seconds into the music video we get a long shot and see three models with Pharrell all the models are wearing are plastic dresses gold chains and red lipstick. This portrays female seduction this is also known as the male gaze, which are the way women are in advertisement and through men. The music video portrays women as sexual objects, which is why its gets a lot of criticism and from people. However this is one of the reasons why the music video got so many views and why the album sold so many copies is because “Sex” sells and stereotypes that are demonstrated   that it has in the music video. However the name of the song blurred lines is asking questioning its viewers what is yes and no that people are always getting confused between
It portrays women as just being attracted to men that have money as and want to sleep with men who have money and fame.

The artist himself Robin Thicke is wearing a black and white suit most likely tailored to fit him and a gold watch. This demonstrates that the artist is wealthy and by dressing this way women will be attracted to you and want to have sex with you. This is promoting a lifestyle of where by being rich and dressing well and having expensive clothing means that you get all this woman attention and people what to be you.  
As you can see in the photo we can see that he has to two beautiful models by his side.

During the whole song we get a text saying hash tag Thicke In red and the text is bold. The use of this shoves the artist name in the viewer’s head to create memory of the artist name by doing this demonstrates promoting the artist himself and furthermore promoting him on social media as Hash Tag is used on social networking site like Facebook and twitter. This is promoting his social media followers and creates a memory in the viewer’s mind as its continuously being shown in the music video. 
 


The Reason for this music video is that it’s to promote the song Blurred lines. This goal was defiantly reached as the song son had over 400,000,000 views and till to this day is going from this we can tell that the song and the artist that featured in this goal lot of recognitions.
The music video could also to promote his album “Blurred Lines” the album was a hit and in its first week sold 177,000 copies. This portrays that the album was a success and made a lot of money and therefore gave the artist being popularity. Furthermore this is means more money for him and the record company which is Pharell record company Star Trak Entertainment. This made the company a lot of money and promoted it as 
Additionally the music video received 9 awards by having a music video this song would have reached such success by having promoting.  This music video increased the expansion of Robin Thicke profile.  


A lot of people will say that this song was a breakthrough for the artist and why he got so popular. As many like myself did not know who he was before the song “Blurred lines” many people did not know who the artist was and this was the song that gave the artist fame and popularity. Furthermore this lead to him featuring in songs with other artist like Kendrick Lamar.

This demonstrates the quick rise to fame for Robin Thicke illustrates the effect of realizing music video on YouTube. There is also chance that your music video could be nominated for best music video in the year. As there is category for best music videos at the MOBO awards. Furthermore the type of song this it is which is very sexualising women and young people

Promotion of an Album

An example of a music video that promotes the artist album would be “Chipmunk Power up” The name of the song is the same name of the album which portrays he’s trying to promote it and my realising a music video this allows him to share it to a mass audience. Furthermore by having a music video for your album main song will also shows people what the album is about and why they should by it. This song reached over 400,000 views, which demonstrated that the purpose was meet.  This was his 3 highest sold album that he had realized it was also 3rd highest in charts.  For this Chipmunk was nominated for best grime act for the “MOBOS”. By having the album cover at the opening of the music video for 10 seconds creates a memory so the audience know that the album is out now and they should go and buy it. This 
The colour used in the cover is orange but they are different tone and shades of orange as the orange fades into a lighter orange from left to right.  The colour orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Additionally this is eye-catching and makes people want to buy it as its selling an image that is something positive.


This song addressed a lot of issues that were going on during the time that this song was realised. It’s about telling people not to give up even though that there is a lot of negative things that are going on. Furthermore people will see the video and want to listen to the rest of the album so they go and buy it.  In the opening shot we get a medium shot of Chipmunk and we can see the Cash Motto logo on a rucksack. This shot is also promoting his brand “Cash Motto” furthermore this product placement is a way for Chipmunk to gain income into his brand.  Additionally leads to brand exposure and expansion of chipmunk profile. The music video is just him going round London just rapping. Its a very chilled music that is  not flashy or try to promote any type of lifestyle. This demonstrates the image that Chipmunk is try to sell. 












Promotion of and synergy with another media product
“Sucker for Pain”


Sucker for pain is a great example of a music video that promotes synergy with another media product as its features and has scenes from the movie “Suicide Squad” The collaboration of the song helps promote film but also the artist as their song will feature in the film and probably the trailer which a wider number of people will see.  This can also help to cement the ideas about the artist and their image. Additionally this can also give the artist in the music video the breakthrough they are looking for as a lot of artist that are in the song were not that popular and this gives them brand exposure. This would also give money to the record company income and could lead to them featuring in other film soundtrack.  

The song is a very aggressive and song which shows the type of image the artist is trying to sell and also what the film is about and the mood of what the film will be . As you can see the video got over 150,000,000 views this would have definite increase the popularity of the film and further promote the film. Furthermore by having clips in the music video that will featuring the  music would make the audience excited to see as they are getting bits from the movie which will there make people want to go and see the actual movie itself. The artist that also feature in this music video have huge amount of media followers and they would have promoted this song furthermore this also increases the promotion of the music video and the film "suicide squad'. 
The transitions from the music video to the music video that is used allows for the audience makes the video seem like a small movie. 














Increasing the range of media an artist is active in
Purple Lamborghini 

Skrillex and Rick Ross are artist who are known for his music. However in this music video they are collaborating with suicide squad actor “Jared Leto” who plays the joker. This increases the range of media they are active this furthermore increases their profile as producers may want to use their song in there film in the future.  Furthermore they could also been used in films as if they are promotion the film they could potentially been in the video. This also helps to create a brand for the artist as they Rick Ross has another song talking about a "Bugatti" which is a super car. The artist will  have a consistent image across different platforms and the lifestyle. He's promotion is a very expensive and glamorous one.  This also helps increases the artist look as it reaches out to more people.  Furthermore by featuring with another artist this helps both of them increase their name and fame. This also increases the outlets such as websites and magazine because their song is going to be featuring in a film that is going to be worldwide. The cross synergy with both the artist increases views of the music video and also with the film this furthermore makes both of them more money.

In Drake music video “Started From The Bottom” he promotes his record company “OVO” by having their clothing brand in this scene increases the brand exposure. Furthermore making the brand recognisable and unique logo being a owl creates a memory for the audience that creates a brand exposure for the record company.   The music video got over 200,000,000 views this will also bring in money for the record company because of the popularity of the song. Drake later realizes an album which had this song and this furthermore promotes the album which generated money for the record company. The music video visuals matches the image which is him staring from the bottom of not having anything to being rich and famous and having a luxurious lifestyle this portrays the lifestyle appeal that the record label is trying to sell., As we see drake hosting a 
huge party and in a private jet. This lifestyle will appeal to young teenagers who  sing/ rap and want to be rich and successful, that if you sign for us that you will be living a glamorous life.   
This song uses gold and bright lighting throughout the video.
